Like a lot of collectors, I question the rationale behind values Beckett attaches to cards. I am always puzzled whenever I flip through a Beckett (any sport) and see random vintage cards go down. How can a 1955 Topps Ted Williams go DOWN instead of up? Or when I look and see random rookies going up for no reason whatsoever. It makes no sense and I’ve long thought that it’s pretty shady, a conspiracy even.

Today, I have been convinced that something is definitely up at Beckett. I was at my local shop and asked to look at the newest Hockey Beckett. The owner and I were both surprised to see that a TON of cards from 05/06 and 06/07 went up. Not just rookies like Crosby, Ovechkin, or Malkin. No, their stuff all stayed the same. I’m talking about Carter, Getzlaf, Lundqvist, etc in addition to common stars. But here’s the thing, it wasn’t high end auto/jersey stuff. It was all MVP, Beehive, and other mid-to-low end cards. Here is a prime example: last month a Getzlaf MVP rookie was $8. This month, $25.

WHAT?!!?

Almost every rookie doubled or even tripled in value. And almost every base card went up too. But why? It makes no sense. UNLESS some random dude at Beckett has a ton of this stuff he wants to move and is looking to manipulate the market.

Beckett, you already had ZERO credibility in the hobby and this only confirms it. Well done!
